Three Kingdoms has the best diplomacy system thus far, great battles, and it looks absolutely gorgeous on both the campaign and battle map. However, if you’re certain that history is more your speed then I have to suggest Three Kingdoms, Shogun 2 & Fall of the Samurai, and Attila. However, there are a LOT of DLCs and so while the base game is stellar be fully prepared to throw down some cash if you fall in love with it - this includes buying Warhammer 1 for the combined campaign map and factions from it as well, though as I said Base WH2 rocks. And despite the fantasy setting, there are factions more or less designed perfectly for non-fantasy familiar fans to ease their way in - it’s not all dinosaurs and rats, there’s ample humanity in a literal sense.

The modding support is remarkable, my favorite mod is Legendary Lore - it was helpful understanding the lore behind who I played. You’re even looking at 69 different legendary lords between something like 15 races/factions with all DLC, and each legendary lord has their own unique campaign and mechanics, as well as cool quest battles. The sheer volume of content and what you can do in game is insane, there’s reasons why people have upwards of 1k hours in it. I honestly would say that Warhammer 2 is one of the best strategy games out there and perhaps even the best ever made. It depends on what you’re looking for and how you play. The same will likely be true for warhammer 3, CA will continue to support game 1 and 2 content in warhammer 3 as much as they can. Another reason to start with the 2nd title if you go for warhammer.
